Has anyone taken the train up to the Kleine Scheidegg? thinking of going up for afternoon to see views of Eiger and maybe eat early dinner. Any good restaurants up there? thanks.
All Kleine Scheidegg is one giant restaurant with a train station attached:) The food is good, I always have lunch there after hiking the trail from Männlichen. It's pricey of course. http://images.travelpod.com/users/nedk/17.1295869468.kleine-scheidegg.jpg
Five minute walk down the trail leads you to a very nice guest house that also has a restaurant,, didn't eat there but looked very busy/popular too . If you just google Kleine Scheidegg you can find all kinds of info. It is a highlight to go up there, my 11 yr old considers it one of the best parts of her Europeon vacation , and I would have to agree. We actually hiked all the way down to Wengen after just to continue to enjoy the views.. its a long hike but not difficult.
One caveat. The weather, on a clear day you can see forever,, on some days,, well, you won't see anything,, so be flexible as to your plans.
There's the joint right ar the station - - it's grub, that's about it. There's another place, Norwand?, that's sterile and also unremarkable. The problem is that Kleine Scheidegg is a bit too close to the mountain to really appreciate it. The best view, especially in the late afternoon, is from the gondola that goes up to First from the east end of Grindelwald. Don't bother in the morning since the sun angle isn't very good. There's also a crappy place to eat up there. None of the three are especially cheap.
Kleine Scheidegg can be a zoo. I'd walk 5 or 10 minutes on the easy trail to Mannlichen. There is a great little restaurant on the right, overlooking the Griindelwald Valley and a dead-on view of the Eiger North Face. Somewhere along there is a map of the face with climbing routes marked and some of the history. I'm afraid I don't remember the name of the restaurant but it has a nice deck and steps up to a viewing platform. It sort of stands alone there and I believe it is paast the junction to the Lauberhorn trail.
Thats the place I mean ,, the one Lola mentioned . I will try and look it up later.
Good information from everyone. I tried to find the cost of the train up from Lauterbrunnen. One site said 53chf TR. I think that might be a bit stiff for just a quick look at the Eiger closer up. Did you all pay that much to go up there?
We walked up from Wengen, and after lunch we walkwd the ridgevtrail and rode the cable car back down, using a Swiss pass for half fare. The regular fare for a round trip on the cable car is 41 CHF.
