Kings Center Hotel - Munich

Has anyone stayed at the Kings Center Hotel recently? Rick's book reccomends the Kings Hotel First Class but they were booked up on the nights I needed. Other choices were Bayerischer Hof (ouch), Feringa Park and the Ambiance Rivoli. Looking for something downtown with walking access to the sights...and beer.

Wherever you decide to stay make it at the Marienplatz. The train station (Hauptbahnhof) area is ugly and dismal and you can do a lot better around the Marienplatz. Everything is walkable from there. There is also a subway (U-bahn) stop at the Marienplatz so everything is super convenient. I would recommend the Hotel Platzl (where we stayed) or the Hotel Torbrau. There are probably others around, but these 2 I know about...wonderfully located and huge breakfasts included.

Good points. Unfortunately, most everything is already booked up when we'll be there (including the Platzl and Torbrau. The only place I've been able to find near the Marianplatz is the Hotel Blauerbock. I've heard many good things about it but also heard its a bit "Spartan". I have to admit I do like a bit of a cushy room and a TV at the end of the day (I've read only 4 rooms have TVs) to catch up on world events. Has anyone had an been there?

Many traveler reviews exist on www.tripadvisor.com concerning the Blauer Bock and they are very positive. I would not hesitate to stay there...you'll definitely enjoy the location over the Hauptbahnhof location!

Very good points. Thank you for all your advice. Marienplatz it is!

We are planning a stay at the MunchnerKindl, just outside of Marienplatz. Very reasonably priced, and thus far, the staff has been very helpful.

We have never been to Munich and are staying at hotel Monaco, 2 blocks from the train station. Is the train station area really that bad? Should we be concerned about our safety?

Is the train station really that bad??? Yes, it's seedy with strip joints and se_x shops and such. It may be deceiving safe also, but given the option of staying in and around the MarienPlatz - definitely go with MarienPlatz!

If I wasn't threatened with 80% cancelation charge I would cancel!

80% cancellation charge would be a big burden. Maybe you should just chaulk it up to a lesson learned. Also, I don't know of any hotel that would charge you 80% for cancelling (unless you are just a total no-show). You must have booked through some travel agency?

We stayed at the Kings Center hotel last spring and were very pleased. I thought it was a pretty good value, and the room was very nice.

Personally I can recommend the Torbräu myself. Great location, rooms are ok for Munich (there is no perfect hotel room in Munich, for whatever weird reason). But in a city like Munich it's all about location, and Torbräu has got one of the best!
