Kings Castles in Fussen in July

Planning to take the train from Munich to Fussen mid July. Thinking of staying two nights. I imagine this will be a very busy time here. Do you think the best time to visit the castles be late afternoon the first day or early morning on the second day?

I would think, logically, if there is going to be some sort of a backlog, it would be more likely in the afternoon. But who knows. If you come out to Füssen on a Bayern-Ticket, the bus to Hohenschwangau is free, unlimited rides. It only takes 8 minutes. Go out and see what the backlog is. See if you can get in for that afternoon or not. If not come back early the next morning.

Go in the morning. Remember, you don't stand in line to get in the castles, you stand in line to get a reservation to enter the castles. Tour groups with a limited number of spots enter the castles at fixed intervals throughout the day. What I observed about two months ago when I went for a quick exterior visit (there was a fresh coat of snow, I was in the area, so I couldn't miss that photo-op) was that the early morning tours were not filled. As I walked by the ticket office on my way to my car later in the morning, however, there was a considerable line. So, it would appear that your best option would be to get there before the first tour buses arrive.

Thank you. I think I will reserve the tickets on-line, sounds like an early morning time would be the best bet.

I was there in October. Started waiting about 11:00 for tickets, got to the counter about 12:30. Got tickets for the 3:00 English tour. That was the slow time, too.

"That was the slow time, too." Really. I don't doubt that you waited, I just doubt it was really a slow time. What part of October? If the first part of the month, the Oktoberfest crowd might still have been influencing the wait. I've seen a slower time. I was there on Aug 31, 2009, and there was very little wait. I didn't wait in line for a reservation for Neuschwanstein because I have been there twice already. I was just documenting the process for my website. I noted that is was 11:30 and the TV display said they were reserving the 12:40 English tour. Since you can't pick up a ticket for a tour less than an hour in advance, that's pretty much as close to no waiting as you can get. Janice, if you are getting online tickets and coming out on the bus, pay attention to the bus schedule. The bus only takes 8 min but it only runs once per hour (timed with the train), and you have to pick up the ticket an hour before your tour. When I was there in 2009, there might have been one person waiting at the ticket pickup window.

Book your tickets on-line. Went there in late March and it was busy even then. Tons of people waiting at the ticket line. July is probably the busiest time of year. If you go to Neuschwanstein as well, either be in good shape because it is a 1/2 uphill hike to the castle, or take the horse carriage, but it costs money of course.

Get there first thing, it's your best chance to beat the crowds. Many are coming on day tours from Munich and don't arrive until later in the morning. We were there October 16th. It was unseasonably cold (well below 30 degrees f). We arrived a little before the ticket windows opened and had almost no line. We booked the first times we could, Hohenschwangau first and Neuschwanstein next. Hohenschwangau wasn't crowded at all, the Neuschwanstein tour seemed full (but maybe they can pack in even more people). After our tours, the busses had arrived. The lines for tickets looked like a busy day at Disneyland. We left and enjoyed other activities with the rest of our day.

Thanks so much for all the tips. Definately booking on-line for an early time.
