King's Ticket question

We will be in Bavaria in 34 days (yippee!!) and would like to go see the 2 castles during our time there. We're a group of 7 or 9 (2 of the people may have to drop out and not go) and I was wondering if we should buy our tickets ahead of time, or can we buy them when we decide which day we will be driving to that area? We're trying to keep the itinerary as loose as possible but if we should buy tickets ahead of time, we will. What has been your experience with Neuschwanstein & Hohenschwangau in early October (Oct 1-7)? Thanks!

I was in Füssen about a month earlier (Aug 31) four years ago, and I went out to the ticket kiosk in Hohenschwangau. It was about 11 AM and the line for Neuschwanstein was not very long, less than half filled the serpentine, and there were multiple counters open.

I've taken visitors to the castles in the middle of October. We arrived early in the afternoon, and the ticket line was insignificant. They were able to join the next scheduled English tour of Hohenschwangau, which was only about a 30 minute wait (if you buy tickets to both castles, your scheduled tour of Hohenschwangua occurs first, because it's much closer to the ticket office). One caveat- I imagine immediately before, during and after Oktoberfest that you might see larger crowds at Schwangau.

That sounds good. I'm thinking we'll have our act together and book 2 days in advance (the website said that was possible) so I'm not too worried about it selling out now. Thanks for your help!

Tickets will only "sell out" if you arrive too late in the day during a busy time of the year. Even during some of the most heavily touristed periods, if you arrive at a decent time, you should be able to buy tickets for a tour that day. You just may have to wait several hours until your assigned entrance time. And if that's the case... there's some good hiking trails in the mountains above Neuschwanstein.
