I was wondering is all 3 of these could be done in a day by car from Ghent. Thanks!! P.S. Sorry for all my questions.
If you end up staying in the night in Utrecht and only give Delft a cursory look... maybe, but it would be a pretty long day.
Thanks Tom!! If you have to pick between Utrecht and Delft, what would you pick???
The main attraction for me in Utrecht was the Dutch Railroad museum. For my wife, the main attraction in Delft were the ceramics. Take out those two factors, and it would be hard to recommend one city over the other.
Thanks Tom, you have been very helpful!!! Danke Schon!!!
I have been to all of them. . . unless you have a strong desire, I'd skip Utrecht. It's a very nice university town, but nothing special. You could spend a few hours in Delft, be sure to see the church in the city center as well as the factories. The kinderdijk is nice as well. be sure to bring along a good camera.
I agree. A combination of Kinderdijk and Delft would be a nice day, Utrecht is nice if you have more time but in 1 day just the first two. Kinderdijk is good for about an hour, walk among the windmills. Delft has a lot. Porcelain factory for sure, + 2 wonderful churches (Oude Kerk and Nieuwe Kerk). If anyone in your party likes Dutch history, the Prinsenhof is great, William the Silent's home, now a charming history and craft museum. William was assassinated there and bullet holes from the attack are still visible in the walls. William's tomb in the Nieuwe Kirke is also interesting. Vermeer is buried in the Oude Kerk (the churches are closed to tourists on sundays). Everything within short walk of Markt except porcelain factory, but just a little out of center, not at all too far to walk.
All-in-all, Delft is the quaintest city I visited in Netherlands, lots of canals, quaint houses, quintessential 'old dutch' charm. The street behind the Niewe Kerk hasn't changed too much since it was painted by Vermeer. Main square (the Markt) and smaller square the Beestenmarkt are both filled with little restaurants and shops.
IMO, skip Utrecht and visit Delft/Kinderdijk for the day. When living in Den Haag for a few years not long ago, Delft was my favorite "day trip" on a weekend. I could just have easily done Amsterdam or ???, but a light lunch & a beer on the square in Delft (and a quick "walkabout") was perfect for a lazy sat/sun afternoon. There are several pay park (& reasonable) parking garages & lots in Delft, just follow the blue `parking signs. Geoff
In addition to the Delft factory (a pleasant walk from town center) Delft has a pretty old town center with canals and a very nive Central Square. A comfortable half day visit easily
I vote for Delft - we loved it and would go back in a minute.
