Kids visiting Munich

One day trip to Munich - what should we see or do. Ages 5-13. Is the Deutsches Museum worth it? These kids have been to all the Smithsonian many times in DC?

Nikki,

The Deutsches Museum would probably be very intersting for children of those ages. However, since there are about 16 kM of exhibits you might want to focus on areas that would interest them the most so that they don't (a.) get too tired (especially the 5-year old) or (b.) lose interest and get bored.

The exhibits of aircraft and V2 rocket (on the 2nd floor as I recall) would probably be interesting for them. They'll be able to climb inside a WW-II vintage transport plane (Dornier, I beieve) as well as see the world's first jet fighter (which was introduced close to the end of the war).

There are displays on just about anything you can imagine including astronomy, textiles, radio, TV, photography, boats, electricity, computers, etc. The display of one of the world's first computers, which used vacuum tubes and was the size of a small rooom, should be quite a contrast to the size of computers today.

If they're intersted in history, perhaps a walking tour of Munich which includes Marienplatz and some of the original palaces used by royalty. The tours usually last about two hours, and your children may be able to tolerate that? If you're interested, check Radius Tours for details and prices.

There's also Englisher Gardens (as I recall, some parts are "clothing optional") the Viktualien Market or some of the large Churches adjoining Marienplatz. With only one day, you probably won't have time for the trip to Neuschwanstein (might be a bit tiring for the children).

Happy travels!

Don't miss the Glockenspiel "show" at the Neurathaus. I am pretty sure the times are 11a, 12n & 5p in the warm weather. Video tape the whole thing if you have a camera. I regret only taping part of it... Never pass by a church without going in. And, don't forget the royal palaces of Nymphenburg and The Residenz.
