One of my group this year is a 12 year old boy. Great kid but I don't want to bore him to death with too many adult things. We'll be in Germany for 10 days and will include a luge rides, gondola rides, Zugspitze, more burgs than schlosses, torture museum, etc. all of which I think he'll enjoy. We'll also be visiting Dachau on our long drive between Dachau and Lutherstadt-Wittenberg. Does anyone have any suggestions for something that might interest him along this route? I know that might be a tough one but I'm sure there's someone on this board that can come up with an idea!
On your way from Wittenberg to Dachau you'd be passing http://www.playmobil-funpark.de/ in Zirndorf (Nuremberg area), the home of Playmobil, where it all began and still is headquartered...
A couple things our boys enjoyed along with things you already have. Rheinfels castle ruins over the Rhine (be sure to pack a small flashlight) and the Salt Mine tour at Berchtesgaden.
We also stayed in Burg Stahlek over the Rhine, a castle converted to hostel that the kids enjoyed.
You should plan at least one train ride, possibly with a Schoenes Wochende pass, so he can get a taste of train travel in Germany. Most American kids don't see the inside of a train very often.
Thanks for all the suggestions.Rheinfels is on our list. When we get to Bacharach we'll take the cruise to Boppard and then the train back. Most of the adults are looking forward to this, too, since they don't get to travel by train. I had thought early on, when we only had 4 people going, we'd do rail passes but it's way too cumbersome trying to get 7 people on and off trains with the sometimes very short connections. Thanks for the tip about the flashlight, too.I have a little travel light I always carry and will be sure to keep it in my daybag.
Not sure where the kid's interests lie, but there's a great railroad museum in Nuremburg.
