Keukenhof late blooming in

Although Keukenhof opened last week, due to the cold spring not many flowers are now in bloom. We were planning to go on Tuesday (March 26) but the receptionist at the Canal House said TV was reporting that flowers were late in blooming. We met a couple at breakfast on Monday that visited Keukenhof the day before and they told us they were very dissappointed. Those planning to visit Keuhenhof might want to check before going to see if the flower are blooming when you plan to visit.

There's more to Keukenhof then just tulips. I've visited the complex three times in mid-May when almost no tulips were around and still had a blast. They're have a wide variety of different flowers other than tulips which will be in bloom, there are also indoor exhibits with exotic offerings like orchids. There's also art & craft and home improvement exhibits, and even a birds of prey show during one visit. Go, there is always something to see and do there.

I would be surprised if there's any flowers at all right now. Other than about 5 days in early March when the temperatures hovered in the upper teens Celcius, this has been a very cold spring. Nothing has sprouted yet in my backyard, whereas last year it was almost in full bloom by this time.

A lot of the stuff on display is grown in a greenhouse, then transported to the flowerbeds in trays and planted. With so much money at stake they're not going to trust mother-mature.

This year has been specially brutal to all sorts of field-grown flowers in the Netherlands. We had a continuum of 9 weeks of sub-zero temps, many plants (even wild flowers) haven't blossomed yet.

I was at Keukenhof last week on Monday. We decided to go because I heard it's worthwhile even if the outside plants aren't blooming yet. I can see why it is so popular, but at this time probably not worth going for people who have limited time to spend in the area. I liked the indoor exhibits of tulips and freesia but other than that you had a nice view of dirt. We took public transit. It was so easy and much cheaper than the bus tours. And since there wasn't much to see we were glad not to be stuck there for 5 hours.
