Just returned from three weeks in France. In the last year or so we have become Rick converts and very much enjoy his books. We did find a couple of issues worthy of comment. Pont de Gard parking is listed as 5 euro in the book. We paid at a machine in the visitor center and were charged 15,50 euro. Perhaps it was a mistake to pay in the center and we were automatically charged the "all inclusive" charge rather than just parking. However, be aware that you may end up paying much more than anticipated. Secondly, if going to the Loire Valley to visit chateau, the book indicates that going from Chinon to Ambroise requires going through Tours which is said to be time consuming. Not so. You can go entirely on highways, nowhere near Tours. Having said that, the trip is still time consuming and if the places one wants to visit are on one side or the other, it is best to stay on that side. We did violate the above principle because while the places we wanted to see were on the Amboise side, we stayed in Chinon. I could not find a place with which I was satisfied on the Ambroise side. I found a place in Chinon that was the nicest we have stayed in on 5 trips to Europe and the price as I recall was under 70 euro.
David - Where did you stay in Chinon?
We stayed at the Logis Saint Mexme. We paid 67 euro but the room we reserved was not available and we were upgraded to a larger room at no additional cost. I did not see the original room. I believe they have only three. The one we had was enormous. It had a living room, bedroom, and bath. Beautifully funished and a very nice breakfast. Owners are lovely people; very helpful when necessary, but not hovering. If you decide to stay in Chinon, either post or private message me and I will give some views on eating and the castle.
david,
Glad to hear that you had a great time. I agree, Chinon is a wonderful place! I stayed at Hotel Diderot there, and would certainly recommend it.
Cheers!
