Just back from Switzerland -- some notes

Hi again,

A couple quick notes on our recent stay in Switzerland:

We're probably the only doofuses who didn't understand this, but the Chateau de Chillon in Montreux is open until 7 p.m. -- an old RS book lists closing time as 6 p.m., but that's just the last entry time. You still have an hour to enjoy the castle.

RS lists the Vevey backpackers hostel as a budget accommodation for Montreux. In the opposite direction (toward the Chateau), a 20-minute walk from the Montreux station, is another great option: the Hostelling International youth hostel in Territet. Super clean, friendly management, private rooms w/ WC, and great breakfast. We balked at the high hotel prices in Montreux, and this was a perfectly good alternative.

On the Friday morning Golden Pass panoramic train from Montreux to Interlaken, there were plenty of open seats in second-class. We were happy we hadn't paid extra for seat reservations.

In the Berner Oberland, go EARLY for the Schilthorn or Jungfrau. Both days of our visit, the summits were clear early in the morning and getting cloudy by about 10 a.m.

Hi Emma

My family and I got back yesterday after a 10 day trip to Switzerland. I second many of the comments that you wrote. We took the Golden Pass train from Interlaken to Montreaux last Wednesday and there were plenty of seats open in second class. I also agree with your comments to go early to see the Schilthorn or Jungfrau. We spent three days in the Berner Oberland region and it was clear in the morning and cloudy by 2:00 PM on each day. We also spent a day in Zermatt and found exactly the same type of weather phenomenon, i.e., clear in the morning and cloudy in the afternoon.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all the folks on this site who helped me plan my vacation to Switzerland. All the hotel recommendations were great, but the views from Hotel Alpina in Murren and the Hotel des Alpes in Luzern were simply terrific.

Those are great tips (I'm planning a Switzerland trip this year) and they'd be great in the "guidebook feedback" section of this site. I think that's where a lot of us look for this kind of feedback, and it doesn't get buried and disappear the way helpline posts do.

Oh, good idea, Christy! I'll post our thoughts there as well.
