Has anyone been to BOTH of these places? If I had to choose one, which one would you choose? It appears that the price of going to Jungfrau (we're staying in Wengen) is MUCH more than the cost of the Zugspitze for my family of 5. We'll be there May 17th for a few days.
Yes, have been to both, and LOVED both! With the Zugspitze, you are in Germany, looking out into the Austrian Tyrol. Views are spectacular...when it's not cloudy! I had a crystal clear day, but clouds ARE a typical occurance. Jungfraujoch is 1 of Europe's great mtn experiences. 1/2 the fun is the train up (takes over 2 hrs) and you go straight through the mtns. If you're a family of 5, with kids, they should love that. It IS 1 of the world's great engineering accomplishments. When you get on top, there is a platform from which you enjoy spectacular views, there's an indoor "ice castle" year round, then you're up on the glacier, where it's a world of white. It's TOTALLY subjective, but if I HAD to choose 1.......I'd PROB go w/ Jungfraujoch. Yes, it's damn expensive, but it really is something your family will talk about for years to come. Not to complicate matters, but did you read about Schilthorn/Piz Gloria, also in the Bernese Oberland? You take a dizzying; in a good way!; cable car up to outdoor platform of the Piz Gloria revolving restaurant. While not as high as Jungfraujock, the views are SPECTACULAR and breath-taking. 360 degree, head-spinning views of the Alps. On clear day, you can see into several other countries. My friends has to drag me away to go back down, I could have stared at the Alpine vistas for HOURS! Rick explains where this is (Lauterbrunnen) in his excellent Switzerland Guidebook, how to get there, etc. Hope this helps! Enjoy, whichever you choose.
If you're staying in Wengen then it really is a no-brainer to visit the Jungfrau...since you are at the perfect starting point. Yes, it's expensive, but if you have a Swiss Pass all of your travels in Switzerland including all the way up to Wengen are covered 100%. From Wengen on up to the Jungfrau your discount is 25%. If you have a Swiss Half Fare Card all of your travels including up to the Jungfrau is discounted at 50%. If you have kids < 16 years traveling with you a free Swiss Family Card entitles them to go all over Switzerland even up to the Jungfrau for free. The Piz Gloria/Schilthorn trek on the gondola up to the revolving restaurant is also very nice with great views...and it's also much cheaper. The same discounts apply here (Swiss Pass, Half Fare Card, Swiss Family Card). Only go on clear days - being on top of the Alps socked in with fog is no fun at all.
We have been to both locations and enjoyed each one for different reasons. However, Jungfrau is by far more spectacular. By the way, Wengen and Murren were our favorites in the area!! HAVE FUN!!!
If you're already staying in Wengen, you'll pay a lot more unnecessary money (and time) to get the Zugspitze. Go for the Jungfrau.
Jungfrau: The whole experience, the trains up, the Jungfraujoch itself and the trip back are all so spectacular.
Can't comment on the Zugspitz as we only viewed it from a distance but the Jungfrau is not to be missed. The cog train up goes through the Eiger.
We are making our second trip to Wengen in June. When we were there two years ago there were dog sled rides but these may have been discontinued.
Thankssomuch for answering so quickly! Guess we'll be going to Jungfrau!
