JUNGFRAU QUESTION

Hi, I have a question re: Jungfrau tickets. I think I have understood that no reservations are necessary on the trains. I wanted to know if there is a charge for children to ride up to Jungfrau. We will have a swiss Pass and family card. Thanks.

Jasmine, your children 15 and under are free with the Family Card. You do not need reservations but groups make them so some of the trains coming up frommGrindelwald are quite crowded. You will all board a new train at Kleine Scheidegg, so stand away from the groups and board quickly in a different car when the train pulls in.

Yes, that Swiss Family Card is an absolute bargain for kids < 16 years old.

Thanks Tim & Sasha! Yes, we are feeling that the Swiss Pass will be well worth it. Is it best to travel to Jungfrau early a.m.?

It's best to travel to Jungfrau whenever the weather is clear. Check the current weather conditions before you go. Could be AM or PM.

Just be aware that you may not reach Jungfrau due to weather conditions. best have alt options in case your plans must chg. We were there for 5 nights in July and did not go to Jungfrau due to weather. We had a terrific time anyway as the entire area and other peaks were clear and we visited them. Good Luck

Three things. First, there is a live video camera in the Lauterbrunnen train station that shows what the weather is like up top. At least there used to be. Second, the first train out from Lauterbrunnen has a discounted fare. Third, you will change trains at Kleine Scheidegg. Sometimes, the entire second train is reserved. This happened to us. A very large Japanese group had the train reserved. We did, however, squeeze on. The Japanese tourists were wonderful and engaging.

Yes, the video camera is still there at the Lauterbrunnen train station. I was there last August. I was at the train station at 5:30 AM trying to decide if I should go or not, because there was a storm the day before. An hour or so later, it became evident that the storm was clearing, so I went up on one of the earlier trains. Although it was 25 degrees fahreinheit at the mountaintop, it was clear viewing. When I took the train back down to Kleine Scheidegg, the sign there said that the trains for the rest of the day were sold out. I stayed in Lauterbrunnen six days, so the first day of good weather was the day I went up to the Jungfraujoch.

The best time we have had up at the Jungfrau was when it was snowing up there. We were traveling from Mürren to Grindelwald via Kleine Scheidegg and decided to go on up. It was not at all crowded, we practically had the ice palace to ourselves and got some very memorable photos, and outside the kids had lots of fun sledding with the international group. Now and then the snow would stop and we could see the Konkordiaplatz and down the glacier to the Eggishorn. I liked that day much better than the time we went up under clear blue skies and the place was so crowded it was fairly unpleasant.
