Can anyone recommend any good tour guides that specialize in the Jewish history of Spain? I am a student and looking for someone that is not too expensive.
This is not really a specific answer to your question..........but while walking to the Picasso Museum in Barcelona we stumbled upon a tiny museum where the old synagogue had been.
Staffed by one person and just full of artifacts.
I know that this does not answer your question....but it might give you something to look for!
So far I've only been able to find one and he charges 300 Euro for 5 hours, which was somewhat out of my price range.
Michael...you don't say where in Spain you plan to be, but probably the best place to get an idea as to the Jewish history in Spain is in Toledo, within easy reach of Madrid. It is the site of the "El Transito" synagogue and the Sefardi Museum. There is a network of Spanish Jewish organizations dedicated to keeping alive the Jewish contribution to Spain....they might be the best ones to contact re: specific tour guides. See http://www.redjuderias.org/red/index.php (There's an English button towards the top left.)
As Norm says, without some idea of where in Spain you are located, or to where you will be traveling, it's a bit difficult to give good advice, but if in Catalonia you should check out Gerona. Of all of the cities I've visited in Spain, Gerona seems most proud of its Jewish heritage.
