Itterswiller looks in the middle between Colmar and Strasbourg. What do you think of it as a home base for a couple nights with a car?
Susan and Monte,
I was in that area a few months ago, but can't offer any comments on Itterswiller. I'd probably find it too "small", as I like to have a reasonably good selection of restaurants and other facilities.
I chose to stay in Colmar and really enjoyed my time there. If choosing between the two main towns in that area, I definitely agree with the Guidebook in that it's preferable to stay in Colmar rather than Strasbourg (although I suppose that's a matter of personal preference). I found Strasbourg to be large and crowded, and I was glad to get back to Colmar.
If you haven't seen the Unterlinden Museum yet, it's great.
Happy travels!
I agree with Ken. Colmar & Strasbourg are only an hour's drive from each other. I'd stay in Colmar - it's very charming and you'll have a much greater selection of places to stay, eat, etc.
Well, count me as a Colmar freakasaurous...and because it kinda fits here, allow plenty of time for the Unterlinden - it ganged-up on us like the Vatican museum did...there are many things BEFORE the altarpiece that we spent a lot of time on - TOO much time, in fact. Twice I've been shooed out of that museum LOL!
I've never had a car in that region, so I can't speak with any knowledge about Itterswiller, but I can see from the map that it's tiny - do you have info on hotels, restaurants, etc?
I agree Colmar offers so many more options. Driving and parking is easy in Alsace. We stayed at Hotel St Martin and parked in a nice lot 3 minutes away. Take the train to Stasbourg though. Colmar is a perfect size and won't get as sleepy at night.
