itnerary help! Paris-Provence-french riviera-madrid-Barcelona

We are somewhat following our daughter's school trip (but adding on 4 days at beginning. my husband and I fly into Paris (MUCH better flight from home town) and have 4 days before going to Nice area. We will have a car. I was thinking 3 nights in Provence. I have Rick's book... but wanted to hear what other thought about a good base there. We will be starting March 25th. The school group will stay in Nice 3 nights , but we are open to suggestions (we just want to meet up with group for lunches etc. some days) Their next stop for 1 night is Marseille, then 2 nights in Barcelona before train to Madrid for 4 nights. I wondered abt St Remy in Provence and Villafranche in French Riviera I would appreciate any thoughts.....Also recommendations in Madrid and Barcelona Thanks!

St. Remy is my favorite home base for Provence. Beautiful town with a great market, fun shopping and restaurants. Just the perfect size town for me and a beautiful drive into town with a tree lined street. Close to lots of wonderful villages and beautiful countryside. Villafranche is also lovely, but a much different feel than St. Remy... love them both, but since you will be in Nice for a few days I would do St. Remy.

Sorry, I was not clear. I was wondering abt St Remy in the Provence area and then , instead of Nice, would villafranche be a better choice. Any favorite hotels?? Thanks
