I'll go first and state the obvious.....why not fly into Copenhagen? Depending on what country you're coming from into Frankfurt, get another regional airline to fly to Copenhagen. Maybe you can get a connecting flight or just book an independent separate flight. Due to the distances of the train travel, look into flights instead of train travel. You'll save time and effort in my opinion.
I would suggest flying between your major destinations. Spending all day on a train can get tiresome very quickly. BTW, "Eurail" doesn't operate the rails. They are only a ticket agency jointly owned by the national rail companies that sell marked up tickets and passes.
Dear Kathy and Tom, Thank you for your suggestions and the information! You have been a great help. We are now looking at flights and the cost is comparable to the train and much better time. Our plans are getting more fine tuned... Thank you!
With so little time, I'd have daughter fly into Copenhagen and meet you there. And again, with so little time, I'd cut out Amsterdam and spend the rest of the time in Germany. Your schedule reads 11 days total, 6 days vacation + 5 days travel. For instance, from Amsterdam it will take about an hour from your hotel to the airport, another 2 hours at least before the flight, 1.5 hour flight, another 1.5-2.0 hours from airport (including waiting for luggage) to Munich hotel. That's 6 hours. It's less than the train, but still half a day (or more) wasted. You could take the train from Copenhagen to Hamburg (5 hrs) or Berlin (7 hrs) and start your sightseeing on 9-4, giving you 6 full days. Add Berlin, Dresden, or more Bavaria.
Or end up in Frankfurt (lots to see and do) and fly home from there.
