We will be staying in Wengen (which from what I understand is in the heart of the Bernese Oberland region) the first week in October. We have 7 days - suggestions for day trips?

We would like to take the train, but have been told it would be easy to rent a car for the day if we wanted to.

If your goal is Alps, as you leave the Berner Oberland you will be leaving the Alps behind. I expect that the boats will have stopped or would suggest a ride on Brienzersee. The Brunig pass route train from Brienz to Luzern on the cog. Have you looked at the suggestions in the guidebook? Luzern, Bern, Basel... Gruyére
