Itinerary Reutte to Vienna?

Thinking about a plan for a future trip - for those who have been, does this sound like a good amount of time in each city? Any other cities to consider nearby? Thank you! Fly into Munich Train to Reutte - 3 nights with day trip to Fussen Train to Salzburg - 2 nights with day trip to Hallstatt
*Train to Vienna - 1-3 nights
Fly from Vienna to another destination TBD. Or is car rental a good idea for this trip?

Hi Sharon, I'd say the 3 nights in Reutte is 3 too many. Me, I'd say 1 or 2 nights in Fuessen and 3 or 4 in Salzburg. We like to base in the Berchtesgaden area for our visits to Salzburg and the general area. While Salzburg doesn't need this much time, it would allow you visit's to Hallstatt/Salzkammergut and the Berchtesgaden area (Berchtesgaden, Konigssee, etc.). We always have a rental a car for our trips to Bavaria and Austria. This depends on what works best for you. Paul

Before I can give you an estimate of train fares, which will be far less than a car rental, I need to know how many of you - just one, two, more? I've been to every one of those places, except Vienna, without needing a car. I wouldn't go to Reutte, and not for 3 night. IMHO, Reutte is not a destination, just a place to stay on the way to Fuessen. I'd stay in Fuessen, or if that is too expensive, nearby Pfronten. In any case, train fare to any of those places from Munich would be €21 single or €29 for up to five people with a Bayern-Ticket. Fuessen to Salzburg would be another €21-29. RT from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden is €9 for a day ticket on the RVO bus. That will cover all of your buses in Berchtesgaden as well. If there are two or more of you, Salzburg to Hallstatt, RT in a day, would cost €28 with an Einfach Raus ticket. On the other hand, I would spend more time getting to Hallstatt through the Salzkammergut and spend the night there. In 2009, I spent €17 on buses from Salzburg to Mondsee (SOM wedding church) to St. Gilgen to Bad Ischl to Hallstatt. I took the bus from Bad Ischl to "Hallstatt", actually Lahn, because my accommodations were in Lahn and the bus station is there. With sufficient advance purchase you can get non-refundable discount tickets from Salzburg to Vienna for €29 per person.

We've stayed in Munich 3 nights and one in Reutte. Had a car which made it easy to see 3 of Ludwigs castles in one day as well as the Weiskirche, spent that same night in Salzburg. The car made it possible to go luging as well ( summer nights have light until my bedtime).I like Vienna as well so 2 or 3 nights there sounds right to me. On that trip we flew into Frankfort and went immediately to Bacharach and that area, then the romantic road, Munich, Salzburg and the Salzkammergut, Vienna, then headed east for 4 nights in Lindau ( a bit much). I'm a car person for the country but if you are only going to cities then a train is easy.
