Planning a trip at the end of July for 2 weeks. Meeting my daughter and friend in Frankfurt, than would like to travel to Rothenberg, Dachau, Neuschwanstein, Hallstatt, Cinque Terra and Interlaken area. Of course, I know it is probably too much for 2 weeks, but wondering what is a "have to see", and what would be the best way to go. This will also help me decide where to fly out of Europe. Thanks for the suggestions.
I am frequently in Europe, and unless I am trying to save money, or don't have the time, I always rent a car. It doesn't necessarily have to cost an arm and a leg! For instance I have(for 2011) a car booked in the UK for the month of August for $692 and one for October in France for $770. Make sure you can read a map, or get a GPS (that should show you the parking places, which saves a lot of worry). A big advantage of having a car is that you can visit places on the way somewhere and alter your itinerary. I never pre book a hotel and that gives flexibility. Get "Rough Guides" - they are very good for accommodation in various price classes. Good luck!
Dachau was very impressive. I seem to remember there was a free car park there not sure. We have only been to Neuschwanstein very, very off season and was fairly crowded. I seem to remember someone posted that you can make reservations so you might look into that. Enjoy.
Renting a car would be fine for southern Germany, but if you drive it and drop it across an international frontier you may well end up by paying a lot...be sure to check drop fees. Of the places you mentioned, the CT is the farthest south, so it would logically be the place you end up. You might want to train about 5 hrs from Frankfurt to Interlaken, then train to the CT, and back via Milan to Munich, renting a car there. Then you could fly home out of either Munich or Frankfurt, whichever worked best for you.
