My husband and I will be flying into Munich in October and taking a transatlantic cruise home to Florida on Nov.1 from Barcelona. We will be using public transportation. My proposed itinerary is: Munich to Salzburg - 3 nights (train) Salzburg to Hallstatt - 2 nights (train and ferry) Hallstatt to Melk - 2 nights (train) Melk to Krems (cruise) and possibly continue cruise to Vienna - 3 nights Vienna to Cesky Krumlov - 1 night ( I believe that there is a bus) Cesky Krumlov to Prague - 3 nights (train) Prague to Budapest - 4 nights (train) Budapest to Barcelona (flying) - 2 nights Does this schedule sound alright and have I given each place enough time or too much. Would appreciate any advise and if there is other places I should add on or take away.
Thank-you!
I assume you have found more than a day of sights in Hallstatt and Krems, which I haven't been to. I wonder if you aren't cutting Vienna short (where there are plenty of public transportation day trips, ranging from good bus company excursions to independent travel to Mauthausen.) We spent two weeks just in Austria, but didn't see as many cities as you did. We were glad we stayed in Innsbruck too. There are also daytrips from Prague possible, like our car trip to Krumlov ... I have been to Cesky Krumlov, and I'm glad I went. I had a professional interest in the baroque theater. But it's hard to recommend for one night by public transportation. (No question, it's accessible, but much slower than hiring one of Rick's approved car-and-driver services, if you can afford it.) Have you been to other medieval cities? This one is a standout, but it's not a must-see in view of the many others you might encounter. Have you read about "The three T's" towards Krumlov? And I was sorry to miss Marienbad and Karlovy Vary. I also loved the movie "Zelary", but that's maybe for hikers and campers, which we're not. Kathy, please write a more helpful Subject line next time, like "Austria-Czech-Barcelona for cruise". Thank you.
I really enjoyed Barcelona, with all of Gaudi's structures (particularly La Sagrada Familia), as well as the Picasso and Miro museums. So I would cut time elsewhere (from Budapest and Salzburg/Hallstatt) to add days/nights to Barcelona. But obviously, it depends on you and your interests.
