Hi, The husband and I will be travelling to France in June/July. We;re flying into Paris, where we'll be staying for 4 nights. The off to Lyon with the TGV (2nights). We're thinking of renting a car in Lyon to travel to Avignon (2nights) and Arles (1night). That's how far the formal planning goes :-) I was thinking Aix-en-Provence 2 nights, Marseilles 1 night, and then Nice 2 nights... and to take daytrips from there. What do you think? What would you change? We'd like to enjoy the Provence countryside (lavender, markets, etc...), but would also like to see a bit of the Cote'd Zur. I'd really appreciate your input, as this would be my husband's first time overseas!!
Charindie, I think you and your husband have the right idea, but you are making too many stops. For Provence, I would just stay in one place (Arles, perhaps, or a smaller town, since you have a car) and visit the other destinations as day trips. Nice is far enough away to count as another locale, so do stay there too. This will free up a lot of your time and energy for sightseeing.
Agree with Adam. You have 5 nights essentially devoted to Provence. I would pick one town and travel by car. Including Marseilles, you have three nights on the Med. I would spend all three in Nice or other small town in the area, skipping Marseilles. If you have specific reason for Marseilles, I would take one day from the 5 in Provence and make certain to see Cassis.
