itinerary in the upper engadine, Switzerland

I will be visiting Switzerland with my 3 adult children ( first time for them) and want to spend the 6 days in the Engadine. I will spend at least 3 nights in Pointresina with side trips from there. Am I limiting myself by spending all 6 days of our trip in Pontresina ? What side trips do you recommend? Since we are arriving in Zurich and will take the train to Pontresina is there any midway point between those two cities where we might spend a night to get over jet lag and enjoy the scenery. Thanks for your input.

Hi Judith, I've been to the Engadin many times and lived in Scuol when I was a kid. First off, no need to stop anywhere between Zurich and Pontresina. As I recall its about a 3-3.5 hour ride and incredibly scenic all the way (particularly after Chur). Check out sbb.ch for schedules. Just make sure that the train you take routes over the Albula pass (look for trains that stop in Tiefencastel and Filisur) That line is a UNESCO world heritage site and absolutely gorgeous. Some trains route via Landquart/Klosters and go via a long tunnel. Some side trips from Pontresina: Guarda/Ardez/Ftan: just ride the train down the valley towards Scuol and get off at those towns. Ftan will reguire you to ride to Scuol and then taking the bus from there but its a gorgeous town. Guarda will also require a short bus ride from the station up the mountain to the town. All of those towns are gorgeous and represent what the Engadin is all about. Bernina Pass: This is an absolute must see. Ride the train from Pontresina to Tirano and then back. I'd recommend a lunch stop either in Tirano or Poschiavo. Trips to the surrounding peaks - there are a ton of cable cars going up the peaks - do one or more and maybe do a little walking. Check with the TI for suggestions. There are many hikes in the area that arent that strenuous and you'll see the real Switzerland: cows, farmhouses, outstanding views, etc.
Ride the bus up to Sils. I haven't been up there but I hear its beautiful.
