Itinerary Help-Starting and ending in Frankfurt

Hi-I'm traveling with my 9 & 12 yo for 10 days. We are flying in and out of Frankfurt. Any suggestions on an itinerary? I know we'd like to see Neuschwanstein and Salzburg. We are also stopping in Ebenhofen to visit family.

How many days do you plan on spending in Ebenhofen? You could easily do Neuschwanstein from Ebenhofen.

If you have never been there, you should really spend at least three days in Munich. There is so much to see there. Spend another night and do Salzburg as a day trip. Or, better, spend several nights in Berchtesgaden with a day trip by bus to Salzburg. You could stop at Herrenchiemsee between Munich and Berchtesgaden. In Ebenhofen, you are also close to Oberammergau, Linderhof, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Mittenwald.

You also should make a one night overnight trip to Rothenburg, possibly on the way to Munich.

A fairly unknown but nice area is the Illertal in the Oberallgäu. Oberstdorf is a major ski town and looks naturally a lot like Vail pretends to be. From Oberstdorf you can take a bus up into the Kleinwalsertal, a very scenic alpine valley good for hiking.

Your going to run out of days before you run out of places. You'll have to research these places and narrow down the selection.

Kristina: Lee is one of our experts on Germany, he knows a lot. We can give more useful advice if you clarify how you're traveling: train or car?

Thanks Lee for your quick response. I greatly appreciate your suggestions. I am headed to the book store today to look up the places you mention.
Enjoy your day!

Oops, I forgot to mention we will probably be in Ebenhofen for only 2 nights. I'm traveling with my father and this is where he lived when he was a little boy.

We are planning on renting a car. We thought this would give us more flexibility. Our plan is to rent at the airport and return at the airport (Frankfurt).

Kristina, are your travel days (arrival and departure from Frankfurt) part of those 10 days? Have you driven or toured Germany before? I have some ideas, just need more info.

We fly out June 28 and return July 9. So we will have 10 days not counting travel days. I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

For a 10-day trip that includes Neuschwanstein and Salzburg, you might have been better off flying into Munich instead of Frankfurt. But, if you already have tickets for Frankfurt, you should probably spend the first day and night along the Rhine. Then, after a good night's rest, you would be better able to enjoy the long drive to Bavaria and then on to Salzburg.

Flying into Munich is unfortunately very expensive to fly to every time we've flown in. So we always fly to Frankfurt. I'm guessing that's why she's flying there instead. Am I right? But with the fast trains leaving Frankfurt frequently, it's not that big of a deal.... Kristina, you could find a base location in a town like Garmisch and make a day trip to Neuschwanstein. That way you could enjoy the Alps but also see some major sites. Or you could stay in Munich and you could make day trips to Neuschwanstein and Salzburg. I guess it depends on whether your family enjoys the city or country more. You can get to Salzburg in as little as 1 1/2 hours from Munich, and you could take a day tour to Neuschwanstein. Lots to do in Munich!
