We have 7 nights in Germany/Austria. First three we are planning Wurzburg, Bamberg, Nurnberg. Then we will go to Salzberg for night four. Last night (7) is Munich. So nights 5 and 6? Stay two nights in Salzburg and two in Munich? Or all three in Munich? That was original plan. As you can see we like to be on the move. I'm uncertain. Like historical sites. Would like to go to Eagles Nest but think its closed as this will be first week of April. Ideas. Suggestions.
I can see 2 nights in Salzburg if you plan to do quite a bit there and 2 in Munich. But I could also see one night in Salzburg with 3 in Munich - perhaps with a stop at Herrenchiemsee Palace on the way back to Munich. It's near Prien about mid-way between Salzburg and Munich. As for your first 3 nights - I think you can see all these places in 3 days, but it doesn't make sense to me to change hotels every night when these cities are so close to each other. The checking in and out and the packing and unpacking tends to eat up a lot of time. Stay in Nuremberg for 3 nights, and you can easily daytrip to the others. Round trip for two to Bamberg is 15.60 on a "Tagesticket Plus" daypass, and to Würzburg, round trip would be 29 Euros for two on a "Bayern Ticket" daypass. BTW, the same Bayern ticket can be used for Nuremberg - Munich and for Munich - Prien - Salzburg. http://www.vgn.de/tickets/?Edition=en http://www.munich-touristinfo.de/Bavaria-Ticket.htm
Agree with Russ. The thing that I don't understand is Salzburg and then Munich. If plane tickets already purchased out of Munich, so be it. If not, it would seem wise to look into flying out of Salzburg.
If you like to be on the move then Hallstatt seems like a logical choice to me. You might do it before Salburg then on to Munich.
Last year we did the following (number of nights at each place in parenthesis):
Munich(3)-Salzburg(2)-Rothenburg(2)-Nurnberg(2)-Wurzburg(1)-Frankfurt(1) The first three places I'm always ready to vist, especially Rothenburg in the winter time (I've never been there in the busy summer season). Munich is a great base to explore a number of areas. Salzburg was very nice. Nurnberg did nothing for me. Some places hit you good and others don't and this was fell in the later category. Maybe because of the huge (too big in my mind) Christmas market. Wurzburg was ok but we weren't there that long so I can't pass much judgement on it. We did stay at a wonderful small hotel (Hotel Wurzburger Hof). The sitting area in the lobby and the staircase was fantastic. Factor in the train rides and time to get to/from the stations and see how much time you have to see the sights. Two nights in Salzburg might not be much if you arrive late one day and leave early in the morning. Have fun.
According to their website, Kehlsteinhaus (Eagles Nest) doesn't open until May. But there is more to see in Berchtesgaden. I'm not sure why you would want to send an overnight stop between Salzburg and Munich as they are only about 2 hrs apart by regional trains. I went from an eastern suburb of Munich to Freilassing (just minutes from Salzburg Hbf) via a stop to see Herrenchiemsee, in just one day, so I still don't see the point of staying overnight. OK, if you must, I'll suggest this. From Salzburg, go in the morning to Prien and take the boat to Herrenchiemsee. After Herrenchiemsee, take the train to Brannenburg (on the Inn route to Innsbruck) with a change at Rosenheim. Unless you get to Brannenburg very early, stay there for the night. The next morning take the bus to the Wendelstein Zahnradbahn Talstation and take the cog rail train to the top of the Wendelstein. After Wendelstein, take the cable car down to Osterhofen. It's only a 10 min walk from the cable car station to the Osterhofen station of the BOB (Bayerische Oberlandbahn). From there it is just a little over an hour to Munich via Schliersee and Holzkirchen.
Thanks all. Flight is booked out of Munich. I'm a slave to where I score first class FF tix in/out of. Have been to many walled cities and have no interest in Rothenberg. We don't mind switching hotels each night as I'd rather do that that double train time doing daytrips. Thanks for input - gives 3 some ideas to investigate.
Salzberg is a lovely city, but if you're going to arrive early-ish in the day, an overnight there is probably sufficent for seeing the major sights and soaking up the atmosphere. You're probably better off leaving Salzberg in the afternoon then and spending 3 nights in Munich, where there's a lot more to see/do. Also Nurnberg is one of my favorite German cities, the (regular) markets are fantastic. I've overnighted there but wouldn't even mind two nights, particularly if you're going to try to tackle a huge historical museum there. Likewise 3 nights in Munich gives you a full day for hitting a couple of their amazing museums.
