We have booked a house exchange in Munich for the last two July. We plan to rely on public transportationparticularly trains, if possible. Could rent a car if necessary. I'm listing some places we'd like to see, but we are having trouble with: What is the best way to get there? How much time do we need? Are these places the best use of our time? Is anything else more important than what we have listed? As I said, our housing is set up in Munich, but we would be willing to find rooms for several nights if it makes sense to stay overnight while traveling. Here's our list: 1) Munich 2) castles in Fussen (at least one) 3) Coburg 4) Rothenburg ob der Tauber 5) Berchtesgaden 6) Passau 7) Regensburg 8) possible river boat trip 9) possible falconry show
10) possible concert Thank you for any and al help!
Munich isn't always easy to exit and re-enter by car. Daytrips by train from there are doable and inexpensive with the Bayern Ticket, but your chosen destinations are generally going to mean a lot of transit time. 3) and 4) redefine the word "daytrip" (around 6 HOURS, whether by car or train.) You could spend a night in the area and see both. 5) is also 6 hours, at least by train. You could possibly see B'gaden on one day, stay overnight there or in the area, then visit Salzburg and/or nearby Hohenwerfen Castle (which has a falconry show.) 6) is 5 hours of travel. 2)... You're seeing Ludwig's late 19th century palaces there, not really "castles", and you're again looking at around 5 hours of travel by train; Ludwig's herrenchiemsee Palace (on an island in Herrenchiemsee Lake near Prien, one hour each way from Munich by train on the way to Salzburg and Berchtesgaden) is a good alternative. Nymphenburg Palace in Munich is another option. 7) is a good daytrip - 3 hours train travel. There are lots of daytrip options that require less train time... Landshut (less than 1 hr. each way), Andechs Monastery (1 hr. each way), Dachau (40 min each way), Nuremberg (1:40 min each way), Nördlingen on the Romantic Road (2 hrs each way), Augsburg (45 min. each way) and Garmisch-Partkenkirchen (1.5 hrs. each way.) Thanks, Russ. I appreciate the information! Do you have any other suggestions? Is it worth the time and expense to visit Neuschwanstein at all--maybe on a bus tour? Just read about one that also stops at a cheese factory, which would be fun.
"Do you have any other suggestions?" Did you find anything that interests you among the 8 suggestions in my previous post? There's also Salzburg Austria - 2 hours from Munich each way. "Is it worth the time and expense to visit Neuschwanstein at allmaybe on a bus tour?" I don't think it's worth most of a day for just a 30-minute tour. You might add an easy hike from Hohenschwangau along the "Fürstenweg" path to the Alpsee (lake) and beyond for some nice scenery and an escape from the tour bus crowd at the "castles." Yes...you've given us a lot of great ideas. We are thinking about Garmisch instead of Berchtesgaden, combining it with a trip to Mittenwald and perhaps up the Zugspitze. Then, if we went to Obommergau and also saw Linderhof, that might do as well as Neuschwanstein. We would like to see Regensburg, and it sounds doable from your description. I read there is a falconry show at a castle near there. I should have mentioned, my husband and I have traveled in Germany, but we are going with two friends who have not, which is why I'd like to give them a little of a well-rounded trip. They have their hearts set on Coburg, so I think that will be an overnighter. (Also, all of us are in our 60s.) Thanks for your help!
