planning 3+ week trip with my 20 year old son. We will start in Nice area with friends, then go north through Italy across Simplon pass to Brig in Switzerland (to see friends again), then Venice, and toward Bavaria/Tirol and Munich. Fly home from Zurich. It seems like alot of driving but I dont know how else to arrange it. Any suggestions? Thanks
Kathleen,
After reading your proposed Itinerary, I have two initial thoughts....
Rather than flying home from Zurich, I'd suggest using open jaw flights and return from Munich. That would prevent "backtracking" to Switzerland, and will provide you with more time for sightseeing.
Given the distance you're covering and the time frame, I wouldn't drive. Using well planned rail trips will be faster and a much more efficient travel method.
Note that for driving in Italy, you'll require the compulsory International Driver's Permit, which must be used in conjunction with your home D.L. Failure to produce an IDP if requested can result in fines on the spot. You'll also have to be careful not to violate any ZTL areas, which are increasingly common (each violation results in a €100+ ticket!).
Also, there may be issues with your Son driving due to insurance regulations, so you'll be doing ALL the driving. A "highway tax sticker" will be required for driving in Swizterland (be sure to ask the rental agency). Finally, renting a car in France and dropping in Switzerland could result in HUGE drop fees.
I'd have to give some thought to the route you're planning before offering suggestions.
Good luck with your planning!
Thanks for your input Ken. I gave a lot of thought to rail, but really prefer to drive so we can stop in the countryside as we go along. I have leased a car through Europe by Car so son can drive.( min age =18). We have gotten International DL at our local AAA office.
Nice, Brig (switz) and Venice are a must. We do not have to go to Munich, but son wanted to see some of Germany and I thought he would like Bavaria. Using frequent flyer ticket so return from Munich is not an option.
Orig planned Nice, Venice, Brig, Munich but it seemed logical to go north to Brig first then east to Venice and up into bavaria. I just am uncertain how to best enjoy our time after Venice. ( with 7 days remaining of our trip) The trip will be in May. My son loves wwII history. thanks again
