Itinerary - Germany and Austria

Hey guys, I went to Germany and Scotland last year and got lots of good advice from this site. Look at my itinerary for Germany and Austria and let me know what you think.

Arrive Frankfurt - sleep in Bacharach 2 days

Travel south towards Austria and spend 2 nights in the Black Forest region.

Travel to Reutte and spend 2 nights

Travel to Salzburg and spend 2 nights

Travel to Munich and spend 3 nights (with day trips)

Either go back to Frankfurt or fly out of Munich.

I will have a car. I lived in Germany in the late 80s and really enjoy the small villages and rural road trips. I know that most of my trip is south and the Bacharach region is out of the way, but I missed it on my last trip and it really isn't that far to drive from there to Austria.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like a nice itin. Only thing I might ad would be one night in Prien am Chimsee on the way to Munich. I really enjoyed it there. Hope you have fun!

Hi Rob,

Just my opinions... I'd substitute Rothenburg ob der Tauber for the Black Forest.
It's touristy, but a "must see" IMO.

Personally, the allure of Reutte is lost on me. If you're looking at Reutte as a base from which to see Neuschwanstein and maybe the Zugspitze (from nearby Ehrwald, Austria)... I can see that.

With a car, I'd suggest staying not "in" Salzburg, but in the Berchtesgaden area (30 minutes away) and visiting Salzburg from here. The area around Berchtegaden is simply beautiful.

If you can fly out of Munich, I'd add a night to Salzburg area.

One more suggestion... if you have the time, visit Ludwig's Neues Schloss (Herrenchiemsee) on your way from Salzburg area to Munich. It's amazing!

Thanks for the advice thus far. To tell you the truth, last year I drove from Heilbronn to Nurnberg with intentions of stopping at Rothenburg ob der Tauber. I rounded the corner and saw the tour buses lined up outside the main entrance to the city and just kept on driving. I ended up spending most of the day in Colmberg and Lehrberg and had a wonderful time.

I much prefer the castle at Colmberg and what's left at Lehrburg to the hustle of most tourist spots. Had a great lunch at Mykonos in Lehrburg as well! The Tucher Weizen was excellent as well!

Rothenburg is a great place to visit if you stay the night. After all those buses leave it is delightful place. The night watchmans tour is outstanding.
