I am looking for advice on the following trip itinerary: Fly to Marseille Drive to Barcelona after landing (about 4.5 hours) Stay 2 nights in Barcelona Return to condo, hopefully rented on the beach in Cassis Tour Provence in day trips for 6 days Return car at airport and fly out from Marseille Questions: Is the road trip to Barcelona difficult? Is driving across the border and in Barcelona difficult? Suggestions on a hotel in Barcelona (must be close to but NOT on Las Ramblas, we need a quite room)
Would we miss out if we did not head east across the Cote D'Azur? We may only tour Nimes, Aix, Orange, Avignon, Arles and skip points east of Toulon?
I am wondering if you have thought of taking the train to Barcelona. I have done some of that drive and it was quite easy. Nowever, I would never attempt any significant drive after arriving from the US. And I would definitely suggest NOT driving in Barcelona. The traffic is really chaotic and public transport and taxis are cheap.
You could pick up your car after you return to France and use it for the Provence days. Driving in Provence is quite easy. The trains are such a pleasure, I think you would be complicating your trip by trying to drive to Barcelona.
I suggest you get a guide book to the Cote D'Azur- Riviera with pictures such as Eyewitness. See what you will miss by going to Barcelona. If it were my trip I would save Barcelona for another time. btw you don't mention the Luberon which should be a priority.
