My husband and I would like to travel from Amsterdam to Venice in late Sept. early Oct. We know this is somewhat ambitious. Can anyone recommend a route with a few stops along the way (two? Munic, Salzberg maybe). We will have 10-12 days.

Munich is a good choice since you could be there during Oktoberfest (2012 dates are 9/22-10/7). The down side to this is that hotel rooms are extremely hard to find now and are more expensive during the festival. Salzburg is always a good choice. Take a look at "bahn.de" to check out train routes and schedules. You're looking at about 18 hours on trains from Amsterdam to Venice, so you might want to break up the journey into smaller parts so you don't get bummed out sitting on a train so long. For example, you could take a scenic route down the Rhine to the Frankfurt area for a couple nights, then over to Munich and/or Salzburg before heading down to Italy.
