We (mom & daughter, aged 60 & 30) are planning a 2ish-week trip to Europe in May 2011. Tickets haven't been booked. Our itinerary keeps expanding and that's our major problem. My mom is a retiree and I also don't work full-time. So our trip is quite flexible. However, the longer the trip is, the more exhaustive we could get. Please help cross out the places not worth visiting, or any other comments are most welcome. Here it goes: 5 nights in London (+ Bath, Cotswold) 3 nights in Amsterdam (+Bruges) 5 nights in Paris (+ Versailles, Loire Valley) 1 night in Colmar 3 nights in Wengen 1 night in Lucerne 4 nights in Milan (+Como, Genoa & probably a day trip to CT) Thanks in advance! Happy holidays to you all.
I agree with other posters, with only 2 wks I would spend a week in London and a week in Paris. You'll still only be scratching the surface.
If you are attempting to limit the trip to approximately two weeks, then personally I would skip Colmar and Italy. Fly home from Zurich. Save Italy for another time.
I agree that it's not worth going to Colmar for a single night. And if you want to shorten your trip, either skip Switzerland or skip Italy.
Personally, with two weeks, I would only do the front-end of the trip. Add an extra night for Brugge. Although it only takes about one or two days to see, you can't see much of anything if you only allot it for your travel day between Amsterdam and Paris. Likewise, you'd enjoy the Loire Valley more by spending two or three nights there, rather than as a daytrip from Paris.
Thanks everyone! I'll save Colmar & Italy for later then. More question: How to add Colmar in my next trips? Where do you put it in between?
I agree with the others, too much. My suggestion: 5 nights in London, 5 nights in Paris, a few days in Zurich or Lucerne or Loire Valley, fly out of Zurich. Frankly, Colmar is not that fabulous (you'll see it all in 3 hours) compared to Strasbourg or the other very quaint and historic towns on the Alsace wine route, like Riquewihr, Ribeauville, etc.
Everyone has different priorities but I believe most would agree to cut the itinerary in at least half. You could spend two weeks in Paris alone and not exhaust the possibilities, but I would divide two weeks between Paris and Amsterdam or London, or both. I agree that Italy is worth a trip in itself, but if that is your priority, go for it, instead.
Jay:<<How to add Colmar in my next trips? Where do you put it in between?>> We did Colmar as part of a trip like this: Brussels > champagne region of France (Reims, Epernay) > Colmar > Alsace wine road > Strasbourg > Moselle valley (Bernkastel, Cochem) > Trier > Luxemburg > Bastogne > Brussels. We stayed at B&B's and family-run hotels in various small towns along the way. We spent 2 full days in Colmar and enjoyed it very much.
With five nights in London including Bath and the Cotswolds, you will have barely enough time to hit the highlights in London. Same with Paris, Versailles and the Loire Valley. I would recommend limiting your trip those two cities with a few day trips. If you are satisfied with just hitting the highlights, then go ahead and add Amsterdam. The easiest way to make cuts is to get out a map and see what spots are close together and easy to travel between. London, then Paris (via Eurostar) then Amsterdam (via train) would be easy and not take too much time out of your trip. Save Switzerland and Northern Italy for your next trip unless you can add another two weeks.
Tom, thanks very much for your input about Colmar. All, thanks a lot. I really appreciate it. I'll add more days and London and Paris and consider lengthen our trip to cover swiss cities. Happy holidays everyone!
