My husband and I are flying into Zurich at the end of June and wanted some suggestions on how long and where we should go. I have been 2 times before starting in Germany and making my way to the south of Italy and have always had a rental car. We have never had an itenerary and have usually just stayed 1 night in each place then on to somewhere else. Looking for a more relaxing trip so want to plan. I do want to go to Venice, Florence, Sienna and like the idea of staying 2 nights in each. Thought could get a rental car while in Siena for day trips. We are only there 8 nights and fly back out of Zurich. Would love help and what do you think about the train?
I m planning a trip to similar areas as yours but for April. Will b flying into Zurich. Upon touchdown, I will b traveling to Milan.
Milan (1 night) -> Venice (2 nights) -> Milan (2 nights w Florence as day trip) -> Bern (2 nights w Montruex as day trip) -> interlaken -> Lucerne -> Zurich As my fren n I dont drive, all e traveling will b via trains. Not sure if it's applicable to you.
Your itinerary will be a bit stretched as it sounds like you fly into Zurich, but your main travel goals are in Italy (just means a little more travel time). Since you're flying into Zurich you may want to consider visiting the Swiss Alps! I felt pretty relaxed hopping off the plane in Zurich and taking trains/lifts straight to Murren in the Alps, and then trains to Italy. Since you're visiting Venice, I don't think it makes much sense to be driving. Getting back to Zurich for your return flight will just mean planning a little wiggle room, highly dependent on the time of your return flight. Consider this if you don't care to see the Alps: Arrive in Zurich, train to Venice in 6.5 to 7.5 hours (count this day as a travel day and give yourself three nights to fully enjoy Venice) - Night 1: Venice - Night 2: Venice - Night 3: Venice Train to Florence (2-3 hours) - Night 4: Florence - Night 5: Florence - Night 6: Siena - Night 7: Siena Train back to Switzerland (8-11 hours) - Night 8: Zurich or Luzern If you want to visit the Alps, though, skip Siena and finish your trip closer to your return flight - Night 1: Venice - Night 2: Venice - Night 3: Venice - Night 4: Florence - Night 5: Florence - Night 6: Alps - Night 7: Alps
- Night 8: Alps if your flight is later, Zurich if your flight is early (and spend most of that day in the Alps) I used sbb.ch for Swiss train travel and trenitalia.com for Italian. Safe travels!
