Italy to Wengen, Switzerland

My husband and I will fly into Milan and travel to Varenna, Italy for 1 night. How do we get to Wengen? Plan to stay for 3 nights in Wengen. Did I make a good choice making Wengen our base? Then will travel to Montreux for 2 nights. See the Chateau Chillon and see what else we can do in the area. Purchasing a Swiss Pass is best right?

Will have one more night before traveling back to Milan. Any suggestions? Return to the Como area of Italy?

Thanks!

Varenna to Wengen is between a 6-7 hour journey depending on which departure you choose. Check schedules at the Swiss Rail site:

About a 30 minute train ride (or longer boat ride) from Montreaux is Luscanne, with the excellent official Olympics Museum.
For your trip the 4 day consecutive day Swiss Pass will probably work best...even includes admission to the Olympics Museum and Chateau Chillon.

Yes, Murren is stunning! My husband & I stayed in Wengen for 3 nights as a base for seeing the area and we were pleased with that choice.

We stayed in WEngen. We stayed at the Hotel Alpenrose ,300-350 Euros for two with a gourmet meal every night. The views with the South Balcony were wonderful. The hike from the Manliecheen Chable car to Klein Scheidig and halfway back to WengenAlp is great and downhill . The staff at this hotel is friendly kind and very helpful The disadvantage is no swimming pool. You cna buy a day pass for a hotel or use the open air pool. Wengen's views from this hotel are great. They gave us a free upgrade. Also if you stay.,ask to pet the hotel dog a beautiful black coated retriever puppy.Mera. The staff stopped our return minivan to the train to shake our hands . They send you Christmas cards . You can also take a long 40 minute gondola down to Grindelwald and hike from the First or Pfinesteig Cable car to some wonderful places. The First chair lift in Grindelwald has a 3 hour hike , 300 feet altiture gain to a wonderful glacier restaurance. The Pfsteing gondola, 35 mimnutes, has great hiking ot Bachalpsee or further. Wengen is the best place to stay. I like it better than Zermatt. You might consider whether it is worth buying a half price swiss card or 7 day hiking pass for Wengen You might save some money if you do a lot of cable car rides. Next tiem, I wou7ld spend more time in Wengen, it is wonderful.

from Montreux back to Milan, you might consider an overnight in Stresa, on Lake maggiore, which is right on your way. Back to Como would be out of your way.

As for Wengen versus Mürren, I'm not going to get involved in the debate. I love them both, and can never decide between the two, so we usually end up staying in both.
