Italy to Switzerland itinerary advice

Hello, Looking for some advice for our trip this May. I posted a question on the To the Boot board, but I thought the question works here too. We are traveling from the Cinque Terre to the Berner Oberland. We have 4 days in the Berner Oberland, and then we are traveling to Zurich for the day and leaving the next. I've been reading that May isn't the best time to visit Switzerland (especially in the mountains). So, I've been wondering if we should adjust our schedule a bit to either accommodate another day in Italy or if there are some good suggestions for day trips in case the weather isn't good in the mountains. Also, I had thought that we would definitely get Swiss Flex-Passes. We have three kids, and one will need a pass, but the youngest two (9 and 13) can travel free with us on the train. But, it was suggested that a car would be a better option for exploring the area. I know that some villages are car free, but I'd love some advice. Should we consider a car instead? Maybe that would give us more flexibility in case the weather isn't good for the mountains. Thanks!
Becky
