Italy to Austria

Does anyone know ofthe best (least expensive) way to get from Italy to Austria. My girlfriend and I are going to be based in Florence for the month of August. We'll be in Venice a few days and may go on Eurolines from Venice to Salzburg. Does anyone have any better ideas?

The typical route is to Verona (worth a stop alone for the Coliseum and Romeo/Juliet sites) and then north to Bozen and Innsbruck. From there the trains will take you to Salzburg very easily.

Pablo, as the previous Posts mentioned, travel by rail is the best option. I did the trip from Verona to Salzburg a few weeks ago, and the Kufstein-Brennero Pass section is beautiful! I've never tried Eurolines on that route, but I suspect rail is going to be a much faster and more efficient method.

I also agree with the previous post, that a stop in Verona is a good idea. However, if you're planning on staying overnight you might want to book lodgings NOW. The summer opera season (held in the large Roman Amphitheatre) will be on at that time, and not only will there be lots of people, but the price of lodgings is higher then. You might not save any money booking now, but at least you'll have a wider choice of lodgings.

Depending on where you'll be staying in Salzburg, you might consider using a taxi from the station to your Hotel, as it's a lot easier.

Happy travels!

Going from Venice to Salzburg via Veronna is very scenic but there is another route to consider. You can go from Venice to Villach, Austria (Italy/Austria border) and then by Austrian train to Salzburg. Travel times are generally 80hrs. But, there is one run leaving Venice at 14:44 (Train 30 Allegro Johann Strauss) that takes 6.0hrs. However, it arrives in Salzburg at 20:48 which gets into the evening.
