First time visitor to Paris, 2 adults in June, and looking to stay 4 nights in an apartment on Isle St. Louis. Any thoughts on the location generally? Good points or drawbacks of that location we should consider? Thanks!
Very central , very old, very nice, probably pricey but if you can afford it go for it.. I would .
Perfect location for Paris! There are many good areas to stay in Paris but Ile-St. Louis is one of my favorites!
Ile St. Louis is my absolute favorite neighborhood in Paris. Very charming. Like a little village unto itself, in the heart of Paris, surrounded by the river and amazing views. Lots of fun little shops, lots of good eating choices, bakeries, creperies, Berthillon ice cream, produce store with the best fresh squeezed OJ we've ever had, good grocery store, pharmacies, post office. The eastern portion is very quiet, very residential, with a church, an elementary school and a lovely park at the eastern tip. We've rented apts on Ile St. Louis twice and they weren't expensive.
NO better location to stay in if you are in Paris! Don't look back...you'll love it!
I stayed there about 6 months ago in an apartment. Good points: location, quiet. Bad points: quiet.
It's dead after dark but you are not far from the action if you don't mind walking. It was my least favorite place I've stayed for market shopping, but again, not too far. I've stayed near market streets ( and not just the 'rue Cler') so I got spoilt! I'd stay there again and highly recommend it to a first time visitor. I've stayed in the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th and prefer them in that order too. Enjoy your trip!
My experience with ISL is very different from Leslie's. The middle to western end was very lively at night. Lots of restaurants, cafes, creperies, a bar, Amarino ice cream shop, people in the street, laughter and lots of life going on. The pedestrian bridge leading from the western tip to the back of Notre Dame has a band and/or street entertainers until very late at night with lots of happy people watching and interacting. Notre Dame is a 1 min walk away and lots going on there late into the night, again... street entertainers, cafes, lots of people, music...Very fun. The eastern end of ISL is quiet day and night, which I like. The best of both worlds imo.
I don't disagree with Susan at all. That's why I wouldn't discourage one from staying here. Me: Likes to have good food/drink until 1am +. I'm also oddly way into cooking so I like my markets and my apartment kitchens. My favorite Brasserie in Paris is on the same corner Susan talks about so we are sisters here. Book it! I think Susan is probably more accurate on the night scene in June than I am. Next trip look for the south of the 3rd.
