Iserlohn Germany

We are headed off the beaten track in August and will find ourselves in Iserlohn Germany for a few days. Has anyone been there? Any suggestions on what to do during the day there as our evenings are full. Also in surrounding areas is there something we should not miss as we will have a car.

Thanks
Michelle

Never been there.

North & West of Iserlohn is the Megalopolis Essen-Dortmund.

South and East are a series of Nature Parks & Mountains. There are several towns & villages in this area that ADAC identifies as scenic. There are also several routes that are identified as scenic. I would buy an ADAC StaßenAtlas and use it to explore the area. You can wait until you get there to purchase it or order it from Germany. Amazon.de has it.

If you want to research some towns in the area look them up on Yahoo Deutschland.

Most Germany towns have a website that will detail their tourist sights.

Iserlohn has a typical website. Perhaps you have already seen it.

Now this is quite a challenge: You picked a not-so-spectacular town as a base. But the surroundings have got a lot to offer. First and most important of all you're in the heart of the "Culture Capital of Europe" which is an official all-year-festival held every year in a city or conglomeration area anywhere in Europe. Bilbao in Spain or Cork in Ireland where the previous hosts and this year it's Essen and the Ruhr Area in Germany (http://www.essen-fuer-das-ruhrgebiet.ruhr2010.de/en/home.html). This alone should keep you busy ;-) As to recreation: Vist this famous (as for WW2 history) German version of Hoover Dam and Lake Mead: http://www.moehnesee.de/. And if you want to hike, ride a luge or do anything else your fellow American tourists do in the Alps keep in mind you're in the heart of the Sauerland mountains, the most popular vacation area of Dutch people: www.sauerland.com. There you'll find hundreds of tiny villages packed with half-timbered houses, plenty of medieval castles etc etc.
