Is the Carte Orange still available?

Has the Navigo replaced the Carte Orange? Can tourists buy the Navigo on arrival for a weeklong stay?

I don't know if tourists can buy the Navigo. However, I do know for certain that you can still buy the Carte Orange.

We were there last week of June and the Carte Orange was available. We highly recommend them! Price has gone up a little on July 1st. Still a good deal. As others have stated, the Carte Orange is valid from Monday to Sunday. If you are arriving on Saturday or Sunday, you can buy the carte orange and it will start on Monday.
The Navigo is inconvenient for tourists. It requires a deposit and several weeks in advance to get one. Stick with the Carte Orange.

Can I ask what Carte Orange is? I am unfamiliar and heading to Paris in a few weeks...

Thanks in advance!

Carte Orange is the Parisian equivalent of an unlimited Metrocard here in NYC. You have unlimited use of the buses and metro and RER within zones 1 & 2 (Central Paris) for a week - running from Monday through Sunday. For trips outside those zones (airports or Versailles) you must pay an additional fare. You can find info in Rick's book or in Take Your Kids to Europe.

In NYC this is a good choice for our family because we either walk or take the train everywhere we go. For a flat fee we can buy a day, a week, or a month of use and save both money and the hassle of buying tickets or paying individual fares. Not a good choice if you plan to take cabs.

I'll add some things to Becca's description. The price of a Carte Orange depends upon the number of zones it covers. A zone 1-2 CO costs €16.30. It is good for unlimited rides on the Metro, RER, city buses, Montmartre funicular, and trams within those zones. It is sold through Wednesday for the current week. No sales on Thursdays. If you buy one Friday-Sunday, it won't be valid until Monday. Buy it at any Metro or RER station. It requires a small headshot photo. It doesn't have to be a psssport photo. Cutting up an old snapshot works just as well.

Thanks for the info- I lived in NY for many years so the analogy is great! I also appreciate the info regarding purchase times- I will arrive on a Tuesday and purchase then...

Quick additional question- I am staying in 15 as I do not want to be in the tourist area so to speak- will the Carte Orange work from this area? Also, where is the best place to purchase?

Thanks again- this website has been so helpful!
