Is the Carnavalet crowded?

Should I plan to get there very early or late in order to deal with crowds or is it a short wait?

Thanks,

Cecily

There's no special expo at this time that i'm aware of, so no reason for the museum to be especially crowded.

In June when I was just there (on a weekday morning) it was not crowded at all. As a matter of fact, I was the only tourist there. There were 2 small classes of French school children.

I found the museum very interesting. It specializes in revolutionary and pre-revolutionary French art. I loved the model of the Bastille!

actually there is an expo of works of artist Kiraz..sort of fashion cartoons, well known in France..but that's to pay to see...all the rest of the museum is free...My favorite rooms (checking my rs book) are on the 2nd floor..rooms 132 thru 147 with the bedroom of Marcel Proust, reconstructed.

I was there last week and not crowded at all. It is also free, by the way (for the permanent collection). While you are in the neighborhood, you might stop by the Cognaq-Jay (sp?) house, which is also free. Beautiful boiserie and paintings and furnishings. On this day we also got a quick picnic at a boulangerie near cafe Tourelle (sp?) and walked over to Place de Vosges. Wonderful day!

I went to the Carnavalet Museum just this past Sunday morning around 10:30am. No crowd at all. I imagine that would be the case any time you choose to go there given that the exhibits are all explained in French only. Be sure to take along your Rick Steves Paris book so that you can use the tour he provides for that museum. I had other English-speaking tourists coming up to me asking where I'd gotten the book I had!

I went last July, and as most posters said above, it was very quiet and not crowded at all. It's a wonderful museum if you are interested in history, and Rick Steve's tour in the book helped a lot since there wasn't much English. Some of the rooms were closed due to staffing problems, though. Hopefully, that is not the case this summer.
