Hi All, The way I afford a car to drive solo around in Germany is to pitch my tent in campingplatz. I'm going to spend 10 days this time in France in the Alcase and Normandy regions. Is camping similar in France? Any big differences? Can I just wing it, looking for camping signs? It's just me, my car, and a small tent. Thanks for any ideas!
For the most part, you should be able to wing it, especially if it's just you in a small tent. However, most places do take reservations, and you may stumble upon a couple of full campsites. I went camping last weekend at a place that was always empty when I went before, but I made a reservation because I wanted a certain area. I was shocked when I saw a sign posted at the gate saying they were full. There were a couple of large groups that had essentially taken over the place. I'm guessing that I could have driven to some of the other nearby (not as nice) places and found space, though.
I had some friends that camped in Alsace recently and enjoyed it. One of the things that is different is that campfires are allowed at SOME camp sites in France, whereas it's a big no-no in Germany. If you're going in summer when school is out, reservations would probably be a smart idea, however.
