Is Luxembourg interesting?

Will be in Brussels in late October and thought I'd do a day trip into Luxembourg. Is it worth it?

For the city, it's location is interesting since it's half on a cliff. Other than that, it's just a city without much tourist attraction.

The American Cemetery just outside the city is where Patton is buried.

The scenery is pretty good on the southeast border along the Mosel/Moselle river.

I think what I'd do is go to Trier (Germany) instead. If you're driving, it's only another thirty miles or so and the best route would probably take you right through Lux City, anyway.

Luxembourg City might be worth a quick visit for the reason Ed gave. Not many other cities spill into a ravine quite like this one. Pretty and clean, but not a whole lot to see or do. I probably wouldn't lose a day in Brussels to visit if I was on a short trip, but would consider it for a longer one.

If you have any interest in WWII history, you could visit Bastogne and the surrounding area where the Battle of the Bulge was fought. Bastogne is in Belgium but right next to the Luxembourg border. They have an interesting Battle of the Bulge museum and memorial.

The Luxembourg countryside is very beautiful, similar to rural Michigan or Wisconsin.

Mostly agree with all of the above, but will add that there are some really beautiful valleys and castles/chateaux in Luxembourg, and they are blissfully free of the crowds that you will find at better-marketed areas. We absolutely loved Vianden. We thought that part of Luxembourg was a spectacular gem.

Oh, another reason to visit Luxembourg. If you are driving, there is no VAT on fuel. Best place to tank up in Europe.

Hi David

I actually studied in Luxembourg for a semester. I think it is definitely worth a visit, but go in with a plan.

Here are some thoughts/ideas for Luxembourg

  • Lux City (Former Fortress with underground casemates (tunnels). There is a great museum that illustrates the development of the fortress, that earned it the nickname the "Gibralter of The North." Most of the fortifications have been deconstructed, but there are still several visible remnants. -The city sits a plateau, with a scenic river valley below. This makes it very beautiful, especially in the summer.
-Luxembourg was liberated twice by the Allies in WWII, so they are very friendly to Americans. -American Cemetery is very moving, over 5,000 American Soldiers are buried there including General Patton.

If you like WWII or beautiful rolling hill scenery - the North of Luxembourg is for you.

Towns of interest:
Vianden - Cute Town, Historic Castle
Clerveaux - Monestery (Vesper Service), WWII Battle Museum, Family of Man UNESCO Photo Exhibit - Very cool compilation of pictures.
Diekerch - Great WWII Museum with tons of artifacts, tanks, displays.

The Moselle River valley to the south has some great vineyards and boat tours.

It may be a good idea to visit Luxembourg in late June when they celebrate National Holiday. Parades, Parties, Fireworks, glimpse the Grand Duke and his family.

Hope this helps!

I think Luxembourg City is worth a visit. We took the city bus tour. Very interesting.

We also went to the American Cemetery which is 6 miles our of the city. There is a bus that takes you there and back. It runs on a regular schedule.

General Patton is buried there.

It is a beautiful and interesting city.
