to Fuessen on rail, then bus to Hohenschwangau in one day? I'll be spending the night in Hohenschwangau then heading back to Fuessen to pick up a car for the next leg of the trip.
Thanks Tim and Lee.
I'm not planning to leave Munich till late morning or noonish, in any case, so that restriction on the Bayern ticket isn't a problem. It sounds as if I would save a few euros by buying it. Is there any downside to waiting till I am in Munich to buy it? Oh...and I've purchased a temporary Bahn card , because with my other trips (Mainz to Munich, Fuessen back to Mainz) and some local travel in the Mainz area, the discount it provided was worth it. Do you know whether the Bayern ticket would also be discounted?
If bought from an automat, a Bayern-Ticket for one person costs €22.00. A standard ticket from Munich to Hohenschwangau costs €26.20. With a Bayern-Ticket you cannot leave Munich until after 09:00 on weekdays. With a standard ticket you can leave as early in the morning as you wish. The bus fare from Hohenschwangau to Fuessen is €2.20.
Just because you have a Bayern-Ticket doesn't mean you can't leave Munich before 9 AM. You just can't use the Bayern-Ticket for travel before 9. The last train before 9 leaves Munich at 8:51. It gets to Geltendorf at 9:21, so if you buy a Bayern-Ticket and an MVV ticket to Geltendorf (3 zones, €7,50), you can leave Munich at 8:51. Of course, in this case, for a one way trip, the Bayern-Ticket plus the point to point ticket to Geltendorf would be more than just a point to point ticket to Füssen and the bus ticket. If you were coming back the same day, that would not be the case. Note also, that the Bayern-Ticket would include any bus transportation that day, but with the point to point ticket to Füssen you would need a round trip ticket on the bus between Füssen Bhf and Hohenschwangau.
The €26.20 standard fare I quoted includes the bus from Fuessen to Hohenschwangau.
A Bahn Card would not give a discount on Länder tickets. However, assuming it is a Bahn Card 25 (25% discount), the p-p ticket price from Munich to Füssen would be €18. Here is the fare schedule for the RVO bus. It shows the price of an adult one way bus ticket to be €1,90 for 3-4 km or €2,35 for 5-6 km. There is a lower price for a round trip ticket. Google shows the road distance from Füssen Bahnhof to the Hohenschwangau bus stop to be 3.9 km, so that fare should be €1,90, not more than €2,35. The Bahn Card gives you a 25% discount. If you purchase a RT ticket from the driver using the Bahn Card, it should be €2,65- €3,30. The Bahn shows €18 from Munich to Füssen with a Bahn Card and €19,65 Munich to Hohenschwangau (including the bus) with a Bahn Card. (Looks like there is a little reduction for buying them together.) But you will want another trip back to Füssen on the bus. Overall, a one way ticket to Füssen w/ the BC and a RT ticket to Hohenschwangau w/ the BC would be the least expensive (€20,66), followed by Munich to Hohenschwangau w/ the BC and a one way ticket from Hohenschwangau back to Füssen (€21,08), followed by the Bayern-Ticket (€22). These prices are my calculations based on published prices for 4 km on the bus and might not be the same as the Bahn charges. But the prices are all so close it might not matter how you do it
Thank you Lee!
