Is it a true timesaver to pre-buy museum tickets for Amsterdam in August?

In Amsterdam Aug 14 through Aug 18 and wondering if we should pre-buy the tickets for Anne Frank, Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh museums. We hate to commit to a certain visit day and time in advance, but wonder how long the lines tend to be. We would rather give up scheduling flexibility if the lines are truly 2-3 hours. Any insight would be helpful.

I'd do it for the Anne Frank Huis. It is a very small place so getting large numbers of people through there takes more time than in a museum that has more space like the art museums. You may not have to compete with school groups in August but there will still be lots of tourists lining up.

Hi Valerie

I will be in Amsterdam about the same time as you. I bought online tickets for the VanGogh and Rijks and they are both valid from date of purchase to Dec. 31st so you don't have to specify any certain day or time. With the Anne Frank haus, you will need to pick a day and time but I have heard the lines can be really long so it seems like a good choice to buy ahead.

Have fun - Leslie

I too will be traveling to Amsterdam in July, and am planning on visiting the Anne Frank house. How far in advance would you say tickets need to be purchased? For instance, would it be ok to book tickets once we arrive in Amsterdam for two days later, or does it have to be further in advance?

I visit Amsterdam two or three times a year, and the only tickets I would purchase in advance would be for the Rijks and Anne Frank House. Both are popular attractions in small spaces, but none of the cities museums have lines like you would see in Paris; even in the middle of the day. Be aware that the largest art museum in the city will be the Hermitage when it reopens tomorrow....don't miss out:

When we visited Amsterdam a couple years ago in July, we had not purchased any tickets ahead of time - not sure if July is a different situation than August. We were told the Anne Frank house would have quite a line; however, we went there one hour before closing time - there was no line at all, and we had time to see everything we wanted to. We walked right into the museums - no lines. Perhaps we were just lucky.
