My daughter and I have the option of flying into F rankfurt a couple days earlier than planned, to get a day at the Frankfurt Museumsuferfest this August. However, it will cost a little more in airfare, and an extra nights stay, before our friends there are free. Finding it hard to get a hostel I would trust or a hotel for reasonable cost in Frankfurt. As it is also fair event weekend. We've thought about taking the train to outlying town to stay, and meeting friends there before we'd all go to the festival for Saturday. Otherwise, we would get in on Sunday in the evening, and only have a few hours with jet lag to go to the food and vendor site -- really no time for the museums. Anyone been there or have advice on this? Thanks, Erin Also not sure if there is a charge just for the food and vendors, if you don't go to the museums?
This is my favorite event of the year in Frankfurt. If you don't want to go to the museums, you can still have a fantastic time strolling up and down the river. There are usually about 600 stands selling everything from food, to drinks, to artwork, hand-made items or info stands. Last year there were 20 stages presenting music and dance of various ethnic styles. We sat for quite a while by a dance floor, where couples could go and tango, which was a lot of fun to watch. Many of the museums have gardens surrounding them where they also have a lot of jazz bands, or ethnic music and foods. The area around the Staedel, Liebieg Haus, Applied Arts and World Culture Museums are the most popular. Dragon boat racing will be taking place in the daytime. Sat. night is the Organ Mile, with organ concerts in the various downtown churches, and on Sun. night it is the Choir Mile. Fireworks are on Sun. night. If it doesn't rain, this fest gets about 3 million visitors over the weekend, but because it is spread out along the river, it makes it easier to get around, though the crowd jams up a bit at popular spots. If you can find a place to stay that isn't so expensive, I would definitely go to this. Frankfurt knows how to put on a great party, especially along the river. I would say most of the people at this fest are also from the metropolitan area of Frankfurt, and are traveling in for the day by train. You will hear other tourists there, but then again, they may just be Frankfurt residents, as we have a 25% foreigner population. Hope you can make it and then come back and tell us about it.
Thanks so much Jo! Can you tell me if there is a charge to get into the festival? Or is it free and just a charge for museums?
No charge for the fest. Edit: I just saw that they are offering packages on these dates, for as low as 54 euro per night, per person, and includes your hotel, with breakfast, a Frankfurt card that gives you transportation & entry button . http://www.frankfurt-tourismus.de/cms/tourismussuite/en/hotels_frankfurt_germany/weekend_breaks_frankfurt/airport_hotels_frankfurt.html?externallink=package-profile.html&package_id=2021&nights=1&packageRate=TCF&abpreis=55,00&waehrungsname=EUR#hotellist
