Bayeax, WWII sites, and Mont St. Michel and do not want to move around? If not, would you make another suggestion?
Hi Cecily -
Since Caen was rebuilt so mauch after the war, it doesn't have the same charms as a town like Bayeux. If you are looking for a place to stay that has more of an "old world" feel, you may prefer Bayeux.
There are numerous tours that leave from Bayeux for both WWII sites and Mont St Michel, and I am sure you could find just as many tours that leave from Bayeux. Bayeux is about 30 minutes closer to the coast, so that means slightly shorter trips.
We used Caen as a base for the area when we were visiting in 2004. We stayed 2 nights, I can look up the hotel if you're interested, and it worked well for us. The first day we spent most of our time at the war museum in Caen, and looking around the town. The next day we took a train to Bayeaux and took a D-day tour from there. We did not see Mont St. Michel.
I think you would be much happier in Bayeux. A car in the area is a good idea if you want to explore some other towns such as Honfleur. And if you want to go to Caen, it's only 16 miles from Bayeux. A good place to stay in Bayeux is Le Lion d'Or. I'm not sure how long a drive it is to Mont-St-Michel.Ashley
Thank you for all of the recommendations! Cecily
