Is Bordeaux a viable homebase for day trips to Dordogne?

My partner is going to school in Bordeaux and has an apartment there. We are trying to save money by spending the night there as much as possible. Can we daytrip to Dordogne with a rental car or should we spend the night?

It can be a good place to start but you will be traveling the same rail or bus route every day untill you get to where you want to be. The train will stop in Le Buisson(sp?) and then go to Sarlat.Buses will go to Beynac and Domme. Car travel is doable but makes for very long days by time you get back to Bordeaux. The traffic can be heavy on the narrower roads through the wine country. A car is the best option since you can stop at a variety of castles and bastide towns all along the Dordogne. Don't miss Domme or Beynac. Lunch is a must in either Domme or Sarlet. The market in Sarlet and then lunch would be a fantastic yet not too touristy of a trip. You could do this one by train. The roads into the cave valley has the heaviest traffic.

Michelin says its 2-1/2 hours each way by car.

Is that okay for you? It would be too much for us.
