We are travelling from Munich to Innsbruck to Salzburg to Vienna and were were hoping to see Hallstatt on a day trip and want to see some mountain regions and hike. Is Alspbach far from these regions? We will likely spend a night in Igls (outside of Innsbruck) but are therre any other beautiful regions we shouldn't miss? We will be traveling by train, no car. Thanks
Dear Doreen,
please clarify ALSPBACH - you might have a misspelling there!
Once done, I'll be glad to help!
Oops. Think it's without the S. Alpach. ALso seen it spelled Albach. In Tirol.
Spent a week in Alpbach a few years ago. A beautiful place to hike. Beautiful mountain village. Gorgeous scenery. If I remember correctly it was about 45min. to an hour from Innsbruck. But I don't think a train goes to Alpbach. It sits high up in the mountains, but you could probably get a train as far as Brixlegg, and then taxi or bus up to Alpbach.
Glad we got this straightened out - it's Alpbach and it's a worthwhile stop in the Central Inn valley between Innsbruck and Kufstein. Site of international congresses, the town nevertheless is very charming (once the VIPs are out of town and their retinue has taken down the barriers). As I recall, it's about 10 mi. south of Rattenberg, another pretty town despite its name. Rattenberg is a good start - walkable downtown surrounded by medieval walls. The road heads uphill sharply as you get out of town. Nearby are other cute Alpine towns, plus the Happy Cemetery in Kramsach, as yet undiscovered except by locals (which is why I knew about that collection of humorous grave markers).
Frankly, if you want to both see gorgeous scenery and hike close by, stay in the Stubai Valley south of Innsbruck. Neustift is the largest town there, but all are picture perfect. Two places to stay in are the Neustifterhof and a bit farther toward the glacier the Alpenhotel Fernau.
