We are heading to Heidelberg and will need to stop in Frankfurt to switch trains. Based on our plans in Heidelberg, we could easily afford a short stop in Frankfurt (2-3 hours). Can anyone tell me whether this is worthwhile? Are there things near the station that we can see in that amount of time? Obviously it won't be a very thorough visit, but it would be nice to see a little bit of the city and enjoy a break from riding on the train if it is worthwhile. Any advice or ideas of things nearby (preferably within walking distance) that we could check out would be appreciated. Thanks!
The old town is within walking distance. Also, last time I was there there was a bag check. Get off the train, check your bag, walk to the old town, have lunch or whatever. Be sure to allow enough time to reclaim your bag if there is a line.
Have a look at this virtual city tour of Frankfurt: http://www.frankfurt.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=317578&_ffmpar[_id_inhalt]=177743From the central train station take any local train to "Hauptwache" which is sight #18. From there most of the sights are within walking distance. You can download this self-walking tour by clicking on the link in the right column.
