We will be in Vienna the second week of July this summer. Is A/C really necessary or can we get by with a fan in the room? Most hotels do not have A/C, but do offer fans. The difference in price is substantial, but we are willing to pay it. I would prefer to have A/C at that time in the summer. What do you think?
If it's really hot, you'll probably want it. There isn't really a way to know how hot it will be. That being said, my wife and I made it by with a small personal sized fan in Vienna in July in 2010. It wasn't killer 90 degree Florida-humid heat, but it was warm. If you can't sleep while you sweat, it could be a problem. Of course, you could get there and find it is a great week with highs in the 80s - who knows! It is gamble at this point to know the weather. Vienna, from what I could tell, was pretty stagnant. By that I mean, lots of concrete and not a lot of water in the main areas - therefore no breezes like you get near lakes, rivers, and on hillsides. There is a river, but it isn't really part of the historic part of the city like the Seine or the Thames. We were there for almost a week and never saw it because our hotel with the other direction from the center.
