The iPhone Tom Tom app was highly recommended to me at the local Apple store for use in France because it can operate without a cellular connection and not using data. Has anyone else had an experience with this?

I'm using the iPhone's Navigon app in those cases and am fairly happy with it. It works. One has to make sure all the necessary map material is downloaded and installed prior to the trip... But it works. From iOS 6.0 the maps app actually is the Tom Tom map material. But of course it requires data roaming...
