I leave tomorrow for Europe and just read on a different thread about the owner of an ipad that was stolen having to change all his passwords because they were not protected. I've set my own ipad so that I have to type in a 4 digit code in order to access the main screen, and I have my own list of passwords protected with a different 4 digit password in Dropbox. Is that sufficient security for passwords in case I get ripped off?
Brenda, The answer will depend to some extent on what type of information you'll be storing on your iPad. A four digit code will provide (as I recall) 10,000 possible combinations. That's a very minimal level of security and an experienced hacker will likely be able to get through that without too much trouble. You mentioned that the person described in the article had to "change all his passwords". Other than the password to access the device, what other types of passwords was he storing? I don't know if the two four digit passwords you're using will be adequate. I have to deal with the same issue on my iPhone, but I've adopted a more robust security method using a product called E-Wallet. If this is used with a longer password containing both upper and lower case characters as well as numbers, it provides very effective protection so I'm not worried if the four digit code on my iPhone is bypassed. The important thing to remember here is NOT to forget the Password that access E-Wallet! Good luck and happy travels!
Thank you both!
